“I am able to add a little to Bill Greetham’s
memories in the January Bulletin of the nightly Last Post tradition
at Grindal. I do remember playing, and as I was on Grindal from 1955
until 1960, I probably followed Bill carrying out this duty, but for
            how long I don’t remember.
What I do remember is playing at the Remembrance Day Service. This
was normally done at the war memorial overlooking the rugby fields.
But on the occasion I had to play, I failed to follow the Headmaster,
J C Wykes, down to the memorial at the appropriate time and was left
standing at the top of the steps in a state of ever increasing panic.
However, after the minute’s silence, I played from the steps.
            I don’t know whether I started a new tradition, neither do I
remember what the Head said to me afterwards!”
